Itchy dogs
Fran Callen & Meghan O'Rourke
This collaborative work is designed to
highlight the ephemeral and cyclic
nature of ornamentation. As a jeweller this new work has been
a departure
from my usual methods of working, as I have begun exploring the
use of
industrial materials and processes in my practice. With the medium
of
jewellery complimenting in every respect the free and spontaneous
style of
Fran Callen's itchy dog series drawings, transforming them into
distinctive
wearable creations.

MEGHAN O'ROURKE BIOGRAPHY
Adelaide contemporary jeweller and metalsmith
Meghan O'Rourke has been designing and making jewellery for nearly
ten years. She has always enjoyed experimenting with materials
and the process of making, and it was this initial desire to
create that first lead her to jewellery making.
After several years experience working
in the retail jewellery industry, Meghan completed a three year
Bachelor in Visual Arts & Design at Adelaide Centre For The
Arts, where she specialized in jewellery. As of 2006 she has
been based at the prominent JamFactory Metal Design Studio as
an associate designer, from where she is continuing to develop
her private jewellery practice. In late 2007 Meghan spent 6 weeks
working in Delhi, India as part of a Helpmann Academy residency.
As a designer of contemporary jewellery
and small objects, Meghan utilises the fascinating optical effects
of titanium and the vivid colour palate achieved through the
anodising of aluminium. She has since developed a style of working
that is strongly materials and technique orientated, working
intuitively and often letting the process determine the final
appearance of the piece.
FRAN CALLEN
Fran Callen works as an artist, community
artist and art teacher. She graduated from Honours in Visual
Arts at the South Australian School of Art in 2005. She completed
Bachelor of Visual arts in 1996 and Bachelor of Education in
1998.
Fran has been involved in numerous community
art projects, including several Artist In Schools Residencies
funded by Carclew Youth Arts Centre. Her passion for Community
Art lead her to volunteer in Kathmandu, Nepal, and in New Delhi,
India, to work with disadvantaged schools and orphanages on community
art projects in 2006 and 2007. She has also worked in remote
areas and Aboriginal Communities in SA and WA, including Marree
and Nepabunna.
Extensive travel provides inspiration for
her work, including a semester of international study in painting
at the Santa Repararta International School of Art in Florence,
Italy, funded by the Ruth Tuck Scholarship.
As a practising artist she is known for
obsessive 'live sketching' including music concerts, social events
and festivals around Adelaide. Her most recent work was on show
with 7 artists at Light Square Gallery entitled 'Under the Banyan
Tree.' This was an exhibition of works inspired by the seven
artists six week residency in New Delhi in 2007. This cultural
exchange was supported by Helpmann Academy.
Fran has worked on Aboriginal Communities
on community art projects, and as a teacher, and has drawn dogs
in Marree, Nepabunna, Iga Warta, Coober Pedy and remote areas
of the Kimberley's and Pilbara.
This year Fran has been teaching drawing
at the University of South Australia, and teaches Visual Arts
at Tauondi Aboriginal College.
